Stay-at-home experience: you might be a lot confused about whether you should mention your stay-at-home mom’s experiences in your resume or not. Well, it depends on whether your stay-at-home mom experiences are relevant to your job profile or not. Also, it is not good information to put in your resume at least to address any gap in your employment.
Creating a Perfect stay-at-home moms resume.
It is obvious that you need to start your resume with your correct name, contact information, city, state of residence, and professional email address. It is important, as the recruiter may want to contact you if they wish to schedule an interview. So, depending on your job profile, you may also have a professional profile or portfolio website. Now you must be wondering why you should include your portfolio link in your resume. Well, your portfolio will give the hiring managers a chance to view and assess your prior industry experience. It can be beneficial especially when you’ve taken a break from working.
Next to your contact information, will be your profile summary. This profile summary will be brief and confined to one to three sentences. Mention your previous work experience and your professional goals.
For Example; if you are a content writer, you can talk about how many years you were in that role, some unique achievements, your most relevant skills, and what value you can add to the company.
Here is an example of how to write your resume summary section.
“Experienced Content Writer with 5+ years of extensive research, creative writing, story writing, blog/ article writing, script writing, and various kinds of writing. Excellent at team working and client management. Possesses good knowledge of best SEO practices in creating content as per SEO requirements for better search engine performance.”
Remember, don’t write your summary as written below.
“Former content writer with 5+ years of experience, in writing and editing blog posts and other writings. Looking forward to resuming working as a content writer to work on my skills again.”
Next to your summary section, you will mention your experiences. You can mention all your past experiences in your resume in reverse chronological order, starting with the last role before you became a stay-at-home parent. Along with your past corporate experiences, you can still choose to mention your stay-at-home mom experience on your resume and keep the job title like a stay-at-home mom, homemaker, house manager, or caregiver. But before you mention these experiences in your resume, make sure that you go through the job description to gauge how you can describe your past experiences to indicate your ability to fulfill the new role
All the qualifications that you have like any degrees or diplomas and the institution from which you graduated will be mentioned in your education section. If there are some additional courses other than the graduation degree that you have accomplished, then you can mention them in your resume as well as the institution through which you completed the course.
In your skills section, you can include both the skills that you have developed in your previous position as well as the skills that you have developed during your stay-at-home mom period. There are many skills that you must have honed while at home. For example, you must have managed household chores and or created a budget for food, home utilities, or other necessities. You can mention these skills like, “Management Skills”, or “Organization”. Here are some other transferable skills you’ve honed during the so-called employment gap.
Hobbies are also an excellent way of showing how you spend your time while you are a stay-at-home mom. Your hobbies section can be mentioned at the end of your resume. But remember, mentioning your hobbies in your resume depends on whether they are relevant to your job or not. Avoid mentioning any hobby that is irrelevant to your job profile. If they are related, then do mention them in your resume.
